Local imam loses family members in Israeli airstrikes

By admin | 12.30.08 | 1:37 pm

The escalating conflict between Israelis and Palestinians in Gaza has directly impacted at least one Iowan already.  Cedar Rapids Imam Ahmed Elkhaldy said he has lost three members of his extended family in Israeli airstrikes.

According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette:

“Three of my cousins just passed away in Gaza,” Imam Ahmed Elkhaldy, 34, of Cedar Rapids, said on Monday. “They were killed during the night when they were sleeping (by an Israeli weapon that) destroyed half of the building.”

Elkhaldy, president of the Muslim American Society’s Iowa Chapter, said his cousin, a physician, was the father of the other two of his relatives who died.

Elkhaldy said that before he could discuss prospects for peace or roots of the conflict, the current humanitarian crisis would need to end.

“As we are talking … and as the reader will be reading, people will be killed in Gaza by our own weapons,” Elkhaldy said, referring to arms supplied to Israel by the United States. “What I care about right now is that there are innocent people under attack.”

That is really2x evil attack against innocent Israel just don't know how to wage just war

As an Israeli citizen, I humbly offer my condolences to Imam Elkhaldy for his loss. I know this gives him no comfort, but I offer them, all the same.

These airstrikes accomplish nothing but further escalation (and perceived “justification” for the Hamas cause); Omert already tried this tactic with Hezbollah over 2 years ago, and was humiliated — and he humiliated all Israelis with him. I, for one, refuse to be counted among those who place no value on a life merely because it's Palestinian. Jews should know better.

As a Jew, I say that the ONLY way to bring Moshiach (the Messiah) is to seek Peace at all costs. If the sacrifices are not made (on both sides) in pursuit of Peace, there is no merit — it's just an act of pride.

It is, however, time for Hamas to serve the people of Gaza by pursuing Peace; something that is repudiated by their charter & rhetoric (not to mention their actions). The haphazard firing of mortars & rockets from Gaza into Israel does nothing to improve the life of Gazans; when we see Hamas make real & lasting provisions for the basic needs of the population it rules, instead of consciously perpetuating a situation that victimizes and politicizes it's own people, only then can progress be made.
